Fewer Koreans married last year than ever before, with the number of newly-registered marriages falling to an all-time low of 309,000,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to Statistics Korea. But the slowdown is not the only change in marriage trends. Comparisons with data from 1999 reveal many interesting developments in the way Koreans are tying the knot.
Some 622 teenage men married in 2009, considerably less than 2,385 a decade ago. Most of the teenage grooms last year (465) married teenage brides, but some chose women in their late 30s. The number of grooms aged between 20 and 24 last year totaled 9,158, and the average age of first marriage was 31.6 for men, and 28.7 for women.
Of the 9,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],353 men aged 55 or over who married last year, 112 of them tied the knot with women in their 20s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in a stark contrast to a decade ago when there were only two such marriages. Some 81 percent of foreign brides came from China,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Vietnam or the Philippines, and 851 came from Cambodia, which recently instituted a temporary ban on marriage to Korean men. There was a rise in the number of brides from the U.S. (416),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mongolia (365), Uzbekistan (365), and Russia (139).
There are also new trends in marriages of Korean women to foreign men. The number of Japanese grooms has fallen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while the number from China has climbed from around 200 a decade ago to over 2,000 for the last several years.
The number of grooms from the U.S. has remained steady at around 1,000 per year for the past decade. At 1,312 last year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they formed the third largest group of foreign grooms,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], after China (2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],617) and Japan (2,422). Next were Canada (322), the U.K. (166), and Australia (159). Germany was seventh with 110 and Pakistan eighth with 104.
